English essay

The Power of one is a movie about Apartheid directed by John Avildsen. It shows the harsh treatment of African people, and the racist white African tribes like the Afrikaners. The scene where Jaapie Botha hangs up P.K’s chicken is a good example of the injustices served during apartheid. The following techniques used in the scene were: Low angle shot, close up, nondiegetic sounds, diegetic sounds, long shot, low key lighting

In the scene where Jaapie Botha kills P.Ks chicken, John Avildsen uses a low angle shot to show Jaapie Botha overpowering P.K.For example, It shows a low angle shot of Jaapie Botha standing in front of P.K and the other school kids, this makes Jaapie look tall and strong. It impacts the audience by showing Jaapies power. The purpose of the low angle shot was to show the Power that Jaapie Botha has over P.K.In this scene, it shows a low angle shot of japie Botha standing in front of everyone, looking down on p.k. This affects the audience by showing how much stronger Jaapie Botha is compared to P.K.This reminds me of when p.k is brought in to the room by the other kids and Jaapie stands over P.K.

In the scene where  Jaapie Botha slaps P.K and makes him bleed, a close up of P.K’s face is used. In the scene it shows that P.K is scared and angry, P.K stands up for himself and pushes Jaapie. In the close-up shot of P.K, it shows he is afraid and angry. In this scene, it shows a close-up shot of P.Ks bloody face looking at Jaapie Botha.this affects the audience by showing that P.K is scared and angry but still stood up for himself. This aspect can be compared to when P.K is hung up from the beam, it shows a close up of P.K bloody and angry.

In the scene, Low key lighting is used to illustrate the time of day, and to make the scene more unsettling. We see this throughout the whole scene when Jaapie Botha hangs P.K’s chicken. John Avildsen did this to make the scene more uncomfortable. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable, it helps us understand that they are inside. This is important because it Makes the whole scene feel more uncomfortable, this is important because it shows the evilness of Jaapie Botha.

In Conclusion, in the film the Power of One directed by John Avildsen we see the use of Close up, Low angle shot, and low key lighting.
